Professor Mabelle sat in her office facing the wall-sized window behind her desk. It overviewed the cafeteria in the school. She had asked for this specifically so she could keep an extra close eye on those filthy humans. The experiments or, the gifted as Professor Tyrell preferred to name them. She could care less for them though. The only reason she was involved in this was so that she could have her say in their great plan. That and they’d offered her a fair amount of dollars to have her scientific expertise on the team. How could she refuse it?
There came a knock upon her door. Standing she walked over to greet the knocker. No doubt it was the Mizeals. They were due for their monthly tour any minute now.
Mabelle opened the door bringing a smile upon her face. Yes, it was them --the ones who brought this entire island together. Mr. And Mrs. Mizeal had given half of their fortunes over to the cause as well as hire the best of the best scientists, doctors and highly trained actors in support of it. Not to mention giving up their only two sons for experimentation purposes. They were a beautiful couple. Both slender and incredibly fit. Mr. Mizeal had slicked back black hair which was braided from the nape of his neck to his lower back. He was tall, most likely in the six foot range. His face was clean shaven showing off his pointed cheek bones and narrow jaw line. His grey, sunken eyes jabbed holes into your soul if you gazed into them long enough.
Mrs. Mizeal was different. She was short, probably five feet, three inches. Her skin appeared to be incredibly soft, even a baby couldn’t compare. She had shiny brown ringlets that fit perfectly around her face. A shy smile complimented her large brown eyes that made you feel at home. Even the colour of them against her darkened Italian skin was like being welcomed by a chorus of angels. Pure bliss.
“Good evening, Mr. And Mrs. Mizeal.” Mabelle welcomed them in through the door.
“Hello Professor,” Mr. Mizeal said, “It’s a pleasure, as always, though I do ask that you withdraw your formalities. We’ve all known each other for so long now, we’re practically family.”
Mabelle nodded curtly. Of course they were family. Did he happen to forget she was a cousin to him? “Yes of course, Kuro, Catalina.” She looked at each of them before turning to the left wall.
“I believe you will be quite impressed with our progress thus far.” Mabelle told them lifting a vase to reveal a black button. She pressed it and part of the wall slide away, showing an elevator. It was a secret elevator. Not many knew about it. It was meant to stay that way too. If the students or nosey teachers ever found out about it, trouble would erupt.
Mabelle held her hand out toward the elevator, “After you Kuro and Catalina.” She said. The two of them walked in, Mabelle followed. She pushed a button to seal the door then punched in the numbers one one two one. Quickly the elevator began to drop.
“What is the progress report on the experiments living in a normal life setting?” Catalina asked.
“Oh, it’s going over quite well,” Mabelle said, “We are going to be bringing a lot of them in soon for their final tests. I’m really looking forward to it.”
A minute later the elevator stopped and the door opened giving the three a view of a blue lit hall with cobblestone flooring. To the right there was a long platform on a track with seating and various poles. The three of them took a seat. Mabelle dialled in a code on the keypad next to her chair. As the walls and ceiling came up around the platform Mabelle crossed her arms and folded her leg, awaiting the short trek across the island. The platform took off then at full speed, following the track.
Mabelle smiled inwardly. She absolutely loved this piece of machinery. It was practically magic to her –and that’s saying something coming from a scientist. One minute it’s a platform, the next it’s a subway train. She’d come up with the idea herself of course. The Mizeals wanted a quick and easy way to be transported from one end of the island to the next. The wanted to be able to go anywhere on the island they wanted, unseen. So she’d created the NIX-O-41.
The subway train swerved silently around several bends until it decided to ramp up a steep hill. It came to a noiseless stop and the walls withdrew, leaving the passengers an exit. There was a door straight ahead. Mabelle walked towards it and pressed her hand against the scanner. The door opened to reveal an entirely white hallway. She took hold of the clipboard that was hanging on the wall next to the door and began overlooking the papers as she walked with Mr and Mrs Mizeal trailing behind her.
“Alright,” she said pulling up a blind, revealing a white room with a boy and two doctors in it. The boy stood in the center of the room, shirtless, a thick metal collar around his neck. The two doctors were to be currently doing tests with him. “That in there would be Merick Froid. Experiment Number ____. As of right now we know that he can absorb the suns light and use it within himself as well as release it in different ways.” Mabelle closed the blind and continued down the hall. She tossed her wavy blonde hair over her shoulder before pulling up a second blind. It showed the exact same room; white with a high ceiling. The only change in this one was the girl in a white gown facing a wall. Her arms were stretched up smearing what appeared to be paint on the walls. In fact even the floor had an abstract design of light blues yellows and whites. Somehow the ceiling had managed to have pictures on it as well. The janitors weren’t going to be happy. They never were happy with the girl.
“Polly Meard. Experiment Number ____. We extracted her blood and replaced it with a special paint that acts in the same way blood does. She can perfectly recreate any work of art or anything she’s seen or imagines by using just her hands and the paint flowing within her. She has many flaws though: leaks paint out of her hands and feet—sometimes mouth, is in constant need of refills and passes out in temperatures close to or below freezing.” Mabelle let go of the string, the blind snapped down. Kuro flinched. She’d heard a low moaning coming from the end of the hall.
Mabelle tapped her chin in thought, “At the end of the hall,” she said staring down it to where a peek hole the size of a pea was in the wall, “ Is Experiment Number ____--Better known as Enid,” She turned her gazed to the Mizeals, “It, is...a demon. It came here from an entirely different world. It is a god. A god of the living dead! It is in that room and never comes out. Ever. We’re still trying to train it, but so far it hasn’t been cooperating kindly. HOWEVER...” she said turning back to Polly’s window and opening the blind again, “We intend to get rid of this girl. She was a complete failure.”
Catalina frowned at this, “I’m not so sure I can agree with you Mabelle. She seems to bestow a delightful talent. You should send her to Tyrell’s school.”
Mabelle nodded glad that they hadn’t asked questions about Enid. It was not something she liked discussing. Already she’d lost five co-workers and many were recovering injuries. She had no idea how they were going to tame the beast within the boy, “Yes of course.” She said making some changes in her notes. She didn’t intend to disagree with either of the Mizeal’s. Life was far easier just doing what they asked of you.
“And perhaps find a way for her to sponge paint. This may help with her constant refill need.” Catalina added.
There was a moments silent as Mabelle wrote down the things Mrs. Mizeal was telling her. Of course they had already tried the sponge effect for the girl, but it hadn’t gone over entirely well. Either way they could try it again.
Catalina cleared her throat looking down the hallway, “so how is he doing,” she asked, “How is Noah doing?” Mabelle saw Kuro heave a sigh, rolling his eyes –impatient with his wife’s motherly concern. Mabelle went on to answer anyway.
“He’s adjusting to everything really well. The first fourteen years were hard for him but I think he’s really improving now. And you’ll be glad to know that Taro will be going to Tyrell’s school very soon.” Both Mizeals looked shocked by this news.
“I thought he had turned out a failure!” Kuro spat at Mabelle.
“Actually, no,” Mabelle told him furrowing her brow, “He out smarted the doctors by hiding his so-called talent. He’s a shifter. A human shifter. His ability was a complete fluke.” She sighed shaking her head and lowering it.
Kuro crossed his arms, “What is it that he can do exactly?”
“He can change his appearance, “Mabelle said flatly.
“What does that mean?” Catalina asked; worry dripping off the edge of her words.
“Well, if he wanted to look like you or me or some famous person or a hobo on the street he could do it. He was somewhat a failure due to his current inability to control his shifting. But he found out that sugar keeps his normal appearance, so that’s all he eats,” Mabelle explained, “It’s all a bit unnerving really.”
“Yeah, well, he was always an odd unnerving boy. You should have just killed him when he was thought to be a wash out. It would save us all the hassle.” Kuro said holding his nose high as he smoothed back stray locks of hair from his forehead.
Mabelle couldn’t believe what she was hearing. His son could do so much help for the plan it was unbelievable. But here Kuro wanted him dead! Where was the logic in that? Mabelle opened her mouth to speak but Catalina spoke first.
“What’s done is done, dear, “she said rubbing his arm, “We needn’t worry about them now.”
Mabelle smiled, “If you two want you can have a look at Noah’s performance. He’s been on trial in the forest remake for the last few days. He has the most amazing stamina...”Mabelle continued on talking about the boy as she walked down the hall, explaining all the things he could do to them.
