A story I wrote in 2008 for The Institute of Children's Literature course. A BEAD OF GLASS Sitting on the deck, hugging my legs close to me, I hummed a soft tune out
loud. Waves crashing down onto a rocky shore inside my head, making it feel as
if it were going to explode. A cool tear, streamed down the side of my cheek,
sending the hairs on my back to spring up. The lowering sun cast out long
shadows through the trees and neighboring houses. By this time the streets were
empty because people were inside having their supper. It was always the time that
I came out to spend some ‘me’ time. A time when all was quiet, except for the
odd chirping of a robin, or the loud honks of a crow. I looked up at the darkening
sky, as a gentle wind blew a kiss over me, my hair brushed out in front of my
face. The fragrance of peaches came wafting in my nose, from my freshly washed
hair. The sweet scent sent my mouth watering. Wiping the wet from my dry, tear
stained eyes, I faltered to a stand. Lifting my bare, muddy foot, I swept the dirt off
of it and examined the gushing blood rolling down from the big toe. Eyes and
nose scrunching up into tiny wrinkles, at the pain, as I oh so carefully pulled out
the bead of glass. A small smile spread across my face. I placed the piece in the
flat of my hand and scampered on inside. The pain was gone now, although it was
still bleeding. But the blood I could handle.
